PBS interview about “Inferno”

To open James Nachtwey’s work is to witness what it is to be human — the moment of pure aesthetic and ethical consciousness in the midst of beauty and horror. His work is not an aesthetication of suffering — the suffering is there whole and ugly, but in such a way as to promote the kind of thought which we do not have enough of, which is the kind of thought that will alleviate suffering. You can only turn away from his work because you are not strong enough for it, and in your turning is a secret admission that you must become stronger, that you will become stronger.
